Skills + business, together

Black Pearl trains doulas in both doula skills and business operations.

The Program

What is Black Pearl Doula Certification?

Black Pearl Doula Certification is a professional education program for people who want to serve families as doulas. It is built around culturally aligned, trauma-informed care for Black families and communities, and it treats doula work as both a calling and a profession: you learn the support skills and the business skills.

The collective was founded to protect and uplift Black women against systemic medical biases in maternal healthcare, and it has grown into a movement of birth workers, educators, and community advocates. Its training reflects that mission.

Format

How does the training work?

Training combines structured coursework with hands-on practice. Black Pearl has offered immersive weekend retreat-style trainings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and a specialized course for healthcare professionals features flexible online learning with hands-on training alongside experienced Black doulas.

Formats and schedules vary by cohort. Contact Black Pearl for the current schedule, delivery format, and any in-person requirements for your location.

A note on scope

Certification trains you for the non-clinical doula role. It does not make you a licensed healthcare professional, and it does not qualify you to diagnose, treat, or provide clinical care.

  • Comfort measures, positioning, and breathing support
  • Continuous emotional presence during labor
  • Partner and family support

How does advocacy fit into training?

Advocacy is a core skill. Trainees learn to help clients prepare questions, support informed communication, provide emotional support, and help clients understand their options. Advocacy always encourages clients to discuss medical decisions with licensed healthcare professionals, and it never crosses into making decisions for them.
