Becoming a Doula
What does a doula do?
A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and educational support before, during, and after childbirth. Doulas do not provide medical care; they support, inform, and advocate alongside licensed healthcare providers.
How do you become a doula?
You become a doula by completing doula training and certification, gaining hands-on experience, and building the business skills to serve families sustainably. No healthcare background is required.
Can I become a doula without healthcare experience?
Yes. Doula training does not require a healthcare background. Certification as a doula does not make you a licensed healthcare professional.
What is a Black maternal health doula?
A Black maternal health doula provides culturally aligned support, advocacy, and education to Black families, rooted in an understanding of Black maternal health disparities and the value of continuous, respectful support.
What is the difference between a doula and a midwife?
A doula provides non-clinical emotional, physical, and educational support. A midwife is a licensed healthcare provider who manages pregnancy and birth clinically. They often work together on the same care team.
Certification
What does doula certification include?
Black Pearl certification includes training in birth and postpartum support, advocacy, healthcare navigation, cultural competency, trauma-informed care, professional boundaries, and business fundamentals.
Do doulas need certification?
Certification is not a healthcare license. Many families and organizations look for trained, certified doulas, and certification demonstrates that you have completed structured training. Requirements vary by organization and location.
Does certification make me a licensed healthcare professional?
No. Doula certification is not a healthcare license. Doulas do not diagnose, treat, prescribe, deliver babies, or replace physicians, midwives, or nurses.
How long does doula training take?
Training formats vary by cohort. Black Pearl has offered immersive weekend retreat-style trainings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and a specialized course for healthcare professionals with flexible online learning. Contact Black Pearl for the current schedule.
Is the certification recognized everywhere?
Recognition and credentialing requirements vary by organization and location. Contact Black Pearl for current information about the certification and how it is recognized.
Training
What will I learn in doula training?
You will learn prenatal, birth, and postpartum support skills; advocacy and healthcare navigation; cultural competency; trauma-informed approaches; professional boundaries; and business operations.
Where does training happen?
Black Pearl is based in McKinney, Texas, and has offered weekend trainings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Training sessions may be held at separate meeting spaces or venues. Contact Black Pearl for the current location and format.
Does the program include business education?
Yes. Black Pearl trains doulas in both doula skills and business operations. The Business Building program goes deeper for doulas ready to grow a sustainable practice.
How does advocacy fit into doula training?
Trainees learn to help clients prepare questions, support informed communication, and understand their options. Advocacy encourages clients to discuss medical decisions with licensed healthcare professionals.
What is trauma-informed doula support?
Trauma-informed support recognizes how past trauma can shape a person’s experience of pregnancy and birth, and responds with safety, choice, and compassion. It is core to Black Pearl’s training.
Business Building
How do doulas find clients?
Doulas find clients through referrals, community connections, consistent marketing, and clear positioning. Black Pearl’s Business Building program teaches the fundamentals of lead management and marketing.
How do I start a doula business?
Start by defining your services, setting up simple systems, and getting your name in front of families who need you. Black Pearl’s Business Building program covers services, positioning, marketing, consultations, and growth.
Does Business Building guarantee income?
No. Black Pearl does not promise specific income, client volume, or business success. The program teaches fundamentals; results depend on your market, effort, and circumstances.
How do doulas structure consultations?
A consultation is where families decide if you are the right doula for them. Learn to structure consultations that serve the family and your practice, with clear agreements and professional boundaries.
Do I need to be certified before Business Building?
Business Building is designed for trained and practicing doulas. New doulas should start with certification, which already includes business fundamentals.
