What Does a Doula Do?
Chanel Blackmore, Black Pearl Doula Collective September 30, 2026
A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and educational support to a person before, during, and after childbirth. Doulas do not provide medical care: they do not diagnose, treat, or deliver babies. Their role is to support, inform, and advocate alongside licensed healthcare providers.
Support during pregnancy
Before birth, a doula helps with birth planning, education, and preparation. Doulas help clients think through their preferences, prepare questions for their healthcare providers, and understand their options so they can make informed decisions with their care team.
Support during labor and birth
During labor, a doula provides continuous presence and practical support:
- Comfort measures such as positioning, breathing, and massage
- Emotional encouragement and reassurance
- Support for partners and family members
- Help communicating preferences to the care team
- A calm, steady presence through the whole labor
Support after birth
After birth, a doula helps with the early postpartum period: newborn-care guidance, feeding support and referrals, emotional support, and practical help around the home. Postpartum doulas specialize in this period and are covered in more depth in our article on postpartum doulas.
What a doula does not do
The doula role is non-clinical. Doulas do not:
- Diagnose medical conditions or provide medical treatment
- Prescribe or administer medication
- Deliver babies or perform clinical procedures
- Make medical decisions for clients
- Guarantee birth outcomes or prevent complications
Why families hire doulas
Families hire doulas for continuous support, informed communication, and culturally aligned care. For Black families, a doula who understands their culture, history, and preferences can make the birth experience feel safer, more respected, and more supported.
