What Happens in Doula Training?

Chanel Blackmore, Black Pearl Doula Collective September 30, 2026

Doula training teaches the skills of birth and postpartum support, advocacy, communication, cultural competency, and the professional basics of running a doula practice. Black Pearl's certification program pairs structured coursework with hands-on practice and business education, rooted in culturally aligned, trauma-informed care.

The core curriculum

A complete doula training program covers the full arc of support:

  • Prenatal support and birth planning
  • Labor and birth support, including comfort measures
  • Postpartum and newborn-care guidance
  • Advocacy and healthcare-system navigation
  • Cultural competency and anti-bias education
  • Trauma-informed approaches
  • Professional boundaries and ethics
  • Business operations for doulas

Hands-on practice

Doula skills are practiced, not just studied. Training includes practice with comfort measures, positioning, communication, and birth-planning conversations. Black Pearl's program has been offered as immersive weekend trainings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with hands-on time alongside experienced Black doulas.

Advocacy training

Advocacy is central to doula work. Trainees learn how to help clients prepare questions, communicate with their care team, and understand their options, always supporting informed decisions made with licensed healthcare providers. Advocacy training never crosses into medical decision-making.

Business education

A doula career is a small business. Black Pearl includes business fundamentals in its training so graduates understand services, positioning, consultations, marketing, and systems from day one. The Business Building program goes deeper for doulas ready to grow a sustainable practice.

How training is delivered

Formats vary by cohort. Black Pearl has offered weekend retreat-style trainings in the DFW area and a specialized course for healthcare professionals with flexible online learning. Contact Black Pearl for the current schedule, delivery format, and requirements for your location.

What you leave with

Graduates leave with the skills to support families, the advocacy tools to help clients navigate care, the cultural grounding to serve Black families well, and a clearer picture of how to build a sustainable doula practice.
